William John Chewter was born at Rotherfield, Uckfield, Sussex in July 1898 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1912. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1936, he received a Bar to it in March 1955, when aged 59 years, dates of issue that would suggest he left regular service for a year or two in the early to mid 1920s.
