Joseph McDowell was born in Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary. A Farmer by occupation, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Newbridge on 10 January 1900, aged 20 years. With the 45th (Irish Hunt) Company 13th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry he served in South Africa, 13 March 1900-4 March 1901. He was taken prisoner at Lindley, 31 May 1900. He was discharged at McKenzies Farm, South Africa, 4 March 1901. With copied service notes.
