Clifford Ashworth was born in Lancashire in October 1903 and originally enlisted in the Royal Scots Fusiliers in October 1921, but was discharged as medically unfit two years later. As per accompanying documentation, he next appears to have settled in Victoria, Australia, and served in the Merchant Navy in the last War; sold with a quantity of original documentation, including his British Army Certificate of Discharge, dated 16 April 1924; Commonwealth of Australia Certificate of Identity, issued by the Migration and Settlement Office, Australia House, London, on 11 September 1924, with portrait photograph; British Seaman’s Identity Card, dated 23 February 1945, with portrait photograph; Commonwealth of Australia Mercantile Marine Office Certificate of Discharge, dated at Port Adelaide, 5 September 1945 (from the S.S. Nestor of Liverpool).
