Allan Frederick Grant, who was born in February 1916, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 87th (1st West Lancashire) Field Brigade, Royal Artillery (Territorials) in June 1937, when he was noted as having served as a Lance-Corporal in Merchant Taylor’s School Cadet Force. Subsequently witnessing active service in North Africa and Italy, and having served with the British Military Mission to Greece, he ended the war as a Captain, and was awarded his Efficiency Decoration in the rank of Hon. Major in 1951 (London Gazette 15 June of that year refers).
