Holman was appointed a Lieutenant in the 6th City of London Regiment in October 1927 and, having exchanged to the Territorial Army Reserve of Officers in the interim, was recalled in May 1939, when appointed a Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Having then seen action in France with the B.E.F., he was appointed a G.S.O. 3 in the rank of Captain in the East Lancashire Area.
