George Findlater Lyon was born on 5 July 1879 at Forglen, near Banff. A Gardener by occupation, he attested for the Gordon Highlanders at Aberdeen on 3 March 1899. As a Private in the 1st Battalion, he served in South Africa, 16 December 1899-27 August 1900. He was discharged at Aberdeen on 12 June 1901, having been found medically unfit for further service. Having then emigrated to Canada and being employed as a Farmer, he attested at Winnipeg on 30 August 1916, for service in the 107th Pioneer Battalion, Canadian Engineers, giving his home address as Birnie in Manitoba. Sailing on the S.S. Olympic, he arrived in England in September 1916 and entered France in March 1917. Contracting Dysentery in August 1918, he was invalided back to England in October and was only discharged from hospital in January 1919. Returning to Canada aboard the S.S. Tunisian, he was demobilised on 17 July 1919. With copied British and Canadian service papers and other research.
