Alfred Crowther Lyon joined the Royal Engineers on 19 January 1915 and was sent to Gallipoli on 28 July 1915. Then posted to Egypt, he took part in several engagements including the battle of Gaza. He was wounded in action on 30 November 1917, suffering a gunshot wound to the forearm. He embarked for the U.K. on 1 October 1918 and was demobilised in February 1919.
