Henry Walter Shopland was born in Wallington, Northumberland. An Errand Boy by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 13 September 1890, serving as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. Impregnable. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class in October 1891 when in H.M.S. Ganges. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in April 1893 when in H.M.S. Neptune and to Able Seaman in April 1905 when in H.M.S. Cambrian. Serving in H.M.S. Jason, January 1899 to August 1901, Shopland was advanced to Leading Seaman in September 1899; Petty Officer 2nd Class in September 1900 and Petty Officer 1st Class in April 1901. Serving in the battleship H.M.S. Implacable, September 1901 to September 1904, Shopland reverted to the rank of Able Seaman in May 1902 and attained the rank of Leading Seaman, November 1902 to January 1903, before reverting to the rank of Able Seaman once more. He was discharged, time expired, on 26 April 1905 and enrolled in the R.F.R. on the same date, re-enrolling in April 1910. He was recalled to service in the Great War but was invalided out of the service in October 1915.
