O.B.E. London Gazette 1 January 1944: ‘Commander (Retd.) Hugh Smith Pugh, H.M.S. Rodney.’

Hugh Smith Pugh was appointed Midshipman in the Royal Navy on 1 February 1918, and joined H.M.S. Monarch later the same month. He was promoted Sub-Lieutenant in July 1919, Lieutenant in February 1921, and Lieutenant-Commander in February 1929. He retired at his own request on 23 December 1930, but was recalled in 1939 and appointed as Commander (Retd.) to H.M.S. Hawkins, 3 October 1939; to Rodney, 7 January 1942; to Vulture, 16 December 1943; and to Warren, 16 January 1945.
