William Joseph Philip Thompson was born in Wandsworth, London, on 30 April 1912 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Second Class on 17 September 1934. He transferred to the trade of Acting Engine Room Artificer Fourth Class on 20 December 1934, and was advanced to his ultimate rate of Chief Engine Room Artificer on 7 January 1943. He served during the Second World War in a variety of ships and shore-based establishments, including H.M.S. Glasgow when she evacuated the King of Norway to the United Kingdom on 29 April 1940, and in H.M.S. Gallant in 1941, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 17 March 1950. He was shore pensioned on 25 December 1953.
