John Hayward was born in the Parish of North Bradley, Wiltshire, and attested for the 65th Foot at Trowbridge on 1 January 1861, aged 18. He served in New Zealand from January 1864 to August 1865 when the 65th departed Te Awamutu for Auckland and the return to England. In January 1871 the 65th departed for India and Hayward served there until January 1877, when he proceeded to England for service with the Depot at Pontefract. He was recommended for, and received, the L.S. & G.C. medal with a £5 annuity in 1879, and was discharged at Pontefract on 30 May 1882.
