John Gray attested for the 3rd Hussars on 10 January 1906 and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 August 1914, but by November 1914 he had been hospitalised with rheumatic fever. He was discharged from the 2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment, aged 33, on 23 January 1919, and was awarded a Silver War Badge No. B97992.
