Oliver John Stevens attested for the Middlesex Regiment and served with the 4th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914. He later served in the Army Veterinary Corps and was renumbered 985.

James Stevens was born at Kilburn, London, and attested for service in the 3rd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment on 2 November 1900, at the age of 18. He served on St. Helena guarding Boer prisoners of war during the South African War and later in China, before transferring to the Army Reserve in November 1908.
