Irregular Issue

Roman Imperial Coinage, Valens (364-378), An irregular silver Siliqua naming Valens, after Trier’s first Vrbs Roma issue, struck c. 377-83, d n vapgn-si pf avg, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. vrbs roma, Roma seated left on throne, holding inverted spear and Victoriola on globe, tr ps in exergue, 2.18g/7h (MC 261, this coin; cf. Hoxne 822ff). Minute striking split, otherwise very fine, full flan; a pleasing example of the intriguing irregular coinage £200-£260
