The Kruisschanssluis lock was opened by Albert I on 13 August 1928, with the royal yacht Albertville the first vessel to pass through it. The lock was renamed Van Cauwelaertsluis, in honour of Frans van Cauwelaert, who was mayor of the city from 1921 to 1932, on 10 August 1962.
