William John Foster was commissioned Ensign in the 19th Regiment of Foot on 21 February 1855, and served with the 46th Regiment of Foot in the Crimea as part of a draft of reinforcements, being present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 18 August 1855. He was promoted Lieutenant on 2 October 1855, and Captain, by purchase, on 8 July 1859. He is mentioned in the 1881 Census as ‘Retired Bt. Major, 19th Foot.’ A diary that Foster liberated from Sebastopol is now in the Regimental Museum.
