Robert III (1390-1406), Heavy coinage, First issue, Groat, Edinburgh, mm. cross potent, tressure of nine arcs, large trefoils on cusps, lis and crescent stops, rev. three pellets in quarters of cross, lis and crescent stops after dns, villa and rgh, 2.76g/2h (SCBI 35, 558, same obv. die; SCBI 72, 122; cf. B 13, fig. 355, for rev. die; S 5164A). Punch mark in centre of reverse, otherwise better than very fine, a very rare variety, not represented in the Lockett collection £240-£300

Towards the end of the lis and crescent series, the number of arcs in the tressure was increased from seven to nine. The vendor estimates perhaps eleven obverse were used in this scarce variety of which 37 coins were present in the Fortrose (Ross and Cromarty) Hoard (1880)
