Discrepancies arise between the estimated strike suggested by the Mint Registers for this issue and the number of surviving coins. It would seem likely that many of the coins produced during 1674 were struck using old 1673-dated dies. It is not known why the F mintmark for Sir John Falconer was reintroduced at this time to replace the leaved thistle mark.
