William Foster served at home in the U.K. initially in 17th (Service) Battalion, the Manchester Regiment, and later in 25th Battalion Manchester Regiment, which became 69th Training Reserve Battalion. He received the British War Medal as his sole medal entitlement for the Great War (confirmed on the medal roll) for draft conducting duty to France. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1920.
