Evan Frederick Phillips was born at Wealdstone, Middlesex, in 1895 and enlisted on 6 August 1914 as a Private in the 2nd London Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. He served in France from 15 January 1915 to 2 November 1915 and then in the Middle East to 23 March 1917, before being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment on 25 September 1917. He was promoted Lieutenant on 26 March 1919 and according to the July 1918 Indian Army List he was attached to the 1st Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. He resigned his commission on 14 August 1920.
