Provenance: Bt S.E. Schwer December 1980.
The obverse die used on this piece, with the small human eye and exhibiting small positional changes of the legend and punctuation, exhibits the beginnings of a flaw by the left-side rosette and was presumably discarded on the instructions of the fastidious Hamer, although not before this interesting mule, utilising the regular obverse die for the first of Hamer’s 1901 tokens, was produced. Whether it pre-dates the first of Hamer’s 1901 tokens is not known
