William Bell, FRIBA (1846-1919), architect from Darlington, started work at the North East Railway Co as a teenager and progressed to become the company’s chief architect by 1877. He built the town’s Bank Top station in 1887 and designed the stations at Alnwick, Stockton-on-Tees, West Hartlepool, Whitley Bay, Thornaby and many others in the north-east, as well as the first-class refreshment room at Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s Central station, opened in 1892, now the Centurion restaurant and bar.
