M.M. London Gazette 3 July 1919.
George John Edward Smith was born in Northamptonshire, England. Living at 175 Avenue Road, Toronto, and employed as a Butcher, he enlisted in the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column (D.A.C.), Canadian Field Artillery, at Toronto in February 1916, having previously served for five years in the Buckinghamshire Hussars. Arriving back in England in March 1916, and embarked for France that July, he was awarded the M.M. and mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 11 July 1919 refers), possibly for the advance through the Hindenburg Line - it is worth noting that more Canadians received the Military Medal than were mentioned in despatches. Smith was discharged in England in March 1919; sold with copied service papers.
