John Alexander was born in Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland, on 22 June 1872. A Cooper by occupation, and a former member of the Royal Artillery- having served 18 years - he attested for the C.F.A. at Winnipeg in November 1914. Embarked for England, he was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 12 August 1916. However, he re-enlisted in the 190th Battalion at Winnipeg in August 1916, and served with the 4th Siege Battery, C.G.A., in France, until invalided to England in January 1918 and thence to Canada, where he was discharged as medically unfit for further war service on 2 November 1918, suffering from Nephrites; sold with a quantity of copied service papers.
