Harold Conley was born in Grenfell, Saskatchewan, on 10 September 1884. Employed as a Telephone Lineman, he enlisted into the 107th (Winnipeg) Battalion at Winnipeg in February 1916 and arrived in England in that September. Proceeding to France with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, he was transferred to the Canadian Engineers in April 1917, serving with the 3rd Divisional Signalling Company. During the advance to Canal du Nord in September 1918, the Company went forward to Vis-en-Artois where the Corps wireless station received an average of 118 messages per day, demonstrating the necessity of keeping the lines open and operating, and it was probably at this important juncture that Conley earned his M.M. He was demobilised at Winnipeg in April 1919; sold with copied service papers.
