Alexander McLean was born in Edinburgh on 15 October 1874. A veteran of the Boer War, during which he served in the Scots Guards and was awarded the Queen’s Medal & 6 clasps, he enlisted in the C.E.F. at Edmonton in February 1915, and was posted to the 49th Battalion. Wounded in action on 4 April 1916, he was later reported as ‘Missing’, and later still as killed in action on the 5th. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial; sold with copied service papers.
