Herbert John Greatrex was born in Birmingham, England, in September 1872. Whilst still living in Birmingham he was awarded the above described Life Saving Medal by the Aston Manor Swimming Club, in 1888, when aged 16 years. Greatrex subsequently emigrated to Canada, where he was employed as an Architect, and enlisted into the 230th (French Canadian) Battalion at Winnipeg in September 1916. Transferred to the 3rd C.R.T in France during April 1916, he was discharged at Winnipeg in March 1919; sold with copied service papers.
