D.C.M. London Gazette 11 March 1916. ‘For conspicuous gallantry. During an advance Private Leggatt (sic) ran back and assisted the wounded of another company under heavy shrapnel fire. He has invariably displayed great bravery and courage in digging out buried men from the effects of trench mortars and dressing their wounds.’
In The 1/4th (Hallamshire) Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment 1914-1919, by Captain D. P. Grant, p.29, records, ‘For general good work during the first six months in the country ... the Distinguished Conduct Medal (was awarded) to L/C. F. Leggatt (a stretcher-bearer).’
