Duncan Gray Newton trained as a Doctor at the University of Edinburgh, becoming a M.B. C.M. in 1893 and F.R.C.S. Edinburgh 1905. During the Great War he served as a Major in the R.A.M.C. and was on the strength of the 1/4th (Hallamshire) Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, as Medical Officer, when they went to France in April 1915. He was later Medical Officer, Surgical Division of No. 5 General Hospital, Rouen, 1915-16, and Surgical Specialist at the Military Hospital at Prees Heath, Shropshire, 1917-19. He was sometime Surgeon at the Jessop Hospital for Women and a Lecturer on Vaccination at the University of Sheffield. In the 1924 Medical Register his address was listed in Twyford, Berkshire. In the 1934 Register, he was listed as ‘Retired’ residing in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
