John Burns was born in Glasgow in August 1823 and joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Poictiers in August 1844, clearly having gained some experience at sea at an earlier date. Appointed a Caulker in his next ship, the Thunder, he went on to witness active service aboard the Furious in the Crimea War, including the Sebastopol operations, and again, with the Shannon’s Naval Brigade, in the Lucknow operations. Burns joined his final commission, the Racoon, in February 1863 and received his L.S. & G.C. Medal when pensioned ashore from her in October 1866.
