Philip Webb was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in November 1850, one of just 100 examples of the ‘1848’ below bust variety.

He joined the Royal Navy as a Landsman aboard H.M.S. Jaseur in September 1828, aged 19 years. An Able Seaman by the time he served aboard the Druid between 1839-43, he was present in the same ship during operations in the First China War. Rated as Coxswain of the Launch when he joined the Bellerophon in October 1847, on which ship he received his rare L.S. & G.C. Medal some three years later, Webb unusually retained his Petty Officer status when classed as a ‘Pensioner’ shortly afterwards. Indeed he remained afloat with a number of seagoing commissions until finally discharged ashore as a Captain of the After Guard from the Donegal in August 1861.
