Medals from the Collection of R.W. Gould, MBE

A London Blitz King’s Commendation pair awarded to Constable Robert Lewin, Metropolitan Police, who was also decorated by R.O.S.P.A., R.S.P.C.A., and the P.D.S.A.

Defence Medal, with silver Commendation laurel leaf; Police Exemplary Service Medal, E.II.R., 2nd issue (Const.); together with Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Medal for Meritorious Service, gilt and enamel, named and dated 1941; Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Life Saving Medal, bronze (P/Const., 1950) complete with ‘For Humanity’ top brooch; and the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals White Cross of St Giles, gilt and enamel (Police Constable, 6.1.1950) extremely fine (5) £250-300

King’s Commendation London Gazette 15 November 1940: ‘For services in connection with war activities.’ Awarded for courage and promptitude displayed in stopping a runaway horse, 28 October 1940, whereby he sustained personal injury. Also awarded £8 from the Bow Street Reward Fund and the R.O.S.P.A. medal for these services.

Constable Lewin was further commended by the Police Commissioner in October 1946, for ‘ability in a case of attempted burglary’, and again in January 1950, for ‘courage and promptitude in rescuing two ponies from a burning stable.’ For this latter rescue he also received awards from the R.S.P.C.A. and the P.D.S.A.

Robert Frederick William Lewin was born at Southens, Essex, on 18 September 1912, and was a Stock Keeper before joining the Metropolitan Police on 4 September 1939. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in February 1962 and was discharged on pension in September 1964 after a coronary thrombosis. He died on 2 March 1967. Sold with further research including copied Central Record of Service and illustrated article from The Kilburn Times regarding the rescue of the two ponies from Rodborough Mews in West Kilburn.
