Richard Herring was born at Southery, Norfolk, in about 1858. He joined the 9th Foot as a Band Boy in 1871, aged 13 years. He transferred to man’s service in 1876 and served during the Second Afghan War in “H” Company, being discharged after 12 years service in 1883. Herring joined the Metropolitan Police on 20 August 1883 and was dismissed on 1 January 1903 for being ‘Drunk on duty and considered unfit for the Police Force.’
