Edward Charles Stuart Ward was born at East Ham, London, on 22 July 1873. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 10 August 1892, served in India from December 1893 until the end of 1902, and took part in the Chitral Relief Expedition of 1895, the Mohmand Expedition in 1897, and the Tirah Expedition of 1897-98. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 6 April 1903 and volunteered for the Army once more during the Great War, seeing service on the Western Front with the Royal Artillery. He rejoined the Police in March 1919 and retired on pension on 12 March 1928.
