William Edward Cockings was born at Barnet, Middlesex, on 30 December 1880. He joined the Royal Navy in 1897 and served for 8 years before joining the Metropolitan Police on 9 October 1905. A member of the Royal Fleet Reserve, he was recalled for war service in August 1914 and went to France and Belgium with the Drake Battalion of the newly formed Royal Naval Division. He returned to the Metropolitan Police in January 1919 and finally resigned on pension on 13 October 1930.
