William Banner was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire and enlisted in the 11th Light Dragoons at the age of 10 years. He subsequently served underage with the rank of Private until April 1817, when he was appointed a Trumpeter, and was advanced to Trumpet-Major in August 1823, shortly before his participation in the Bhurtpoor operations. Banner was eventually discharged in the rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major in November 1836, as a consequence of being ‘unfit for the duties of a soldier on account of disease of the heart contracted in India in 1830.’
