Hussars); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 6 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen ([1]643 Sgt.-Tptr., 10th Hus[sars]), single initial ‘G.’; 1914-15 Star (2328 Sjt. Tptr., York. Hrs.), ‘Sjt.’ officially added soon after original issuance; British War and Victory Medals (2328 Sjt., York. Hrs.); Khedive’s Star 1884, the reverse engraved ‘1643 Pte. G. W. Berfert, 10th Rl. Hussars’, the first with heavy contact marks and ‘Tpr.’ re-engraved as a result of bruising, fine, the second too with loss of part of naming detail as a result of bruising but otherwise about very fine, the remainder generally good very fine and an exceptional combination of awards (6) £600-800

George W. Berfert went to France with the 1/1 Yorkshire Hussars as a Sergeant-Trumpeter in April 1915, a good 30 years after his first experience of active service in the Sudan. His MIC entry further confirms that he was awarded the Silver War Badge and that his 1914-15 Star was amended and re-issued in 1921, undoubtedly with the addition of ‘Sjt.’ to the rank of Trumpeter (see above).
