John Franklin Richardson was born in Madras, India in December 1881, the son of Major-General John Booth Richardson, R.A., and a grandson of the Arctic explorer and naval surgeon, Sir John Richardson, C.B. Educated at Wellington College and the R.M.C Sandhurst, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire Regiment in August 1900 and quickly saw active service in South Africa, where he served from January 1901 to November 1903.

Advanced to Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion in February 1904, he was attached to the West Africa Frontier Force 1905-08 and served as an Adjutant in the Territorials 1911-13, in which latter period he was advanced to Captain. Having then been placed on the Retired List, he joined the Royal Flying Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Technical Branch in the Great War, passed an aerial gunnery course at Uxbridge in February 1918, and served as a gunnery instructor in No. 151 Squadron out in France that summer. He reverted to the Unemployed List in April 1919.

Settling at Spilsby in Lincolnshire, he joined the local Special Constabulary in 1935 and served variously as Chairman, Vice-President and Hon. Secretary to the Lincolnshire County Cricket Club. He died in January 1955.
