John Pearman Cornell was born in Islington, London in November 1895 and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in April 1918. He subsequently served out in France from September 1918 until December 1919, latterly in the rank of Temporary Sergeant with No. 12 Squadron. He was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve in January 1920; together with an original wartime portrait photograph, his ‘R.F.C.’ shoulder flash indicating a portrait taken at the time of his enlistment in April 1918.
