Clement Henry Ford Palser was commissioned in to the Auxiliary Air Force as an Acting Pilot Officer in August 1939, when he joined No. 933 (Hampshire) Squadron, a Barrage Balloon Section of the A.A.F. It is likely, therefore, he was present when that unit was attacked by enemy fighters at Gosport on 12 August 1940, an action that resulted in the death of 10 airmen and two civilians. Advanced to Flying Officer that December 1940, he remained employed in the Balloon Section until transferring to the Administrative and Special Duties Branch in July 1942, soon after having been advanced to Flight Lieutenant. Awarded the Air Efficiency Award in July 1948, Palser relinquished his commission in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in October 1954.
