Charles Hughes, who was advanced to Corporal in November 1913, first went into action in the regiment’s celebrated charge at Shabkadar on 5 September 1915 (his MIC entry confirms). Advanced to Lance-Sergeant in the same month, and to Sergeant in January 1917, he saw service in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry after the War, attaining the rank of Squadron Quarter-Master Sergeant prior to his retirement in the mid-1920s.
