Harold Ingleson enlisted in the Manchester Regiment in November 1914, together with 41 workmates from Ashton Brothers’ Cotton Mill, Newton Street, Hyde, which body of men went on to form a platoon the 20th (5th Pals) Battalion. Embarked with his unit for France in November 1915, he served on the Somme prior to being invalided home with injuries of a non-combat nature (see R. Pacey’s article on the Ashton Brothers Mates Platoon in the O.M.R.S. Journal, Winter 1987, for further details, and a group photograph including Ingleson).
