Richard Jones, who was born in Hackney, Middlesex, but resident at Rochdale, Lancashire at the time of his enlistment, was killed in action on the Somme on 21 March 1918, the first day of the “German Spring Offensive”, while serving in the 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade - as noted in his unit’s war diary, ‘a violent bombardment commenced at 4.30 a.m. with high-explosive shrapnel and gas-shells’. Jones, who was entitled to just the British War and Victory Medals, is buried in Le Cateau Military Cemetery, France.
