William Frederick Hayden was born in Sandown, Isle of Wight on 25 June 1880. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 29 July 1896 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in May 1897. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in June 1898 when on Volage and to Able Seaman in December 1899 when on Rodney. He served on Beagle, May 1901-July 1904. Awarded the Long Service Medal on 24 June 1913. Serving throughout the war, he joined the R.F.R. in June 1920. With copied service papers.
