A Collection of Railway Medals

Opening of the Hungerford and Lambeth Suspension Bridge, 1845, white metal medals (3), all by J. Davis, façade of Hungerford Market with towers and pillared entrance, rev. suspension bridge, 34mm (2), and 24mm (BHM 2213; E 1395; D. & W. 75/218) [3]. Good very fine but the larger medals spotted, one of each size pierced (£50-70)

Both the market and the bridge were short-lived and demolished in 1860 for the building of Charing Cross station and the Hungerford railway bridge. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who had designed the bridge, re-purchased the chains and they are still to be seen supporting the Clifton suspension bridge, near Bristol
