Col. King, 49th Regt.’; Turkey, Order of Medjidie, silver, gold and enamel; Sardinia, Al Valore Militare, silver, reverse embossed, ‘Spedizione d’Oriente 1855 1856’, and inscribed, ‘Lt. Col. J. H. King, 49th Regt.’; France, Second Empire, Legion of Honour, silver, gold and enamel; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian die, these last five mounted as worn from a compound silver buckle bar by Hunt & Roskell, the set of six in a fitted leather case by Hunt & Roskell, late Storr & Mortimer, London, lid inscribed, ‘Colonel King C.B., Grenadier Guards’, first with minor enamel damage, minor edge bruising, otherwise nearly extremely fine, an attractive set (6) £600-700

John Hinde King entered the Army as an Ensign in 1844 and was advanced by purchase to Lieutenant in 1846 and Captain in 1851. Serving with the 49th Regiment in the Crimea, he was present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann and in the siege of Sebastopol was present at the sortie of 26th October, the capture of the Quarries and the assaults on the Redan on 18th June and 8th September. In the latter action he was severely wounded resulting in the amputation of his left hand. For his services he was created a C.B., received the brevets of Major and Lieutenant-Colonel and was awarded the Legion of Honour 5th Class, Sardinian Medal of Valour and Order of Medjidie 5th Class. Transferring to the Grenadier Guards, he attained the ranks of Colonel in the Army in 1863 and Major in the Grenadier Guards in 1867.
