Machell, Essex and Border Regiments, Order of St. Michael & St. George, gold and enamel, straight bar suspension, with gold buckle on ribbon, Egypt, undated, 3 clasps, The Nile 1884-85, Gemaizah 1888, Toski 1889, last clasp partially separated; Turkey, Order of Osmanieh, 4th Class, silver, silver-gilt and enamel; Khedive’s Star 1884-6. 1 clasp, Tokar (in Arabic), mounted as worn, in Gieves, London case, good very fine and better (4) £180-220

Percy Wilfred Machell was born in 1862, son of the Rev. Canon Machell and Hon. Emma, sister of the 8th Lord Middleton. Educated at Clifton and Sandhurst, he entered the Army in 1882 as a Lieutenant in the 56th Regiment. He served in the Nile Expedition 1884-85 and in 1886 joined the Egyptian Army. In command at the capture of Fort Khormoussa in 1888 for which he was awarded the Order of Osmanieh 4th Class, he served in the operations around Suakin, at Gemaizah in 1888, in the Toski Expedition 1889 and was present at the capture of Tokar in 1891 where he was Brigade Major of No.2 Column. He commanded the 12th Sudanese Battalion during 1891-95 and was Inspector-General of the Egyptian Coastguard in 1896 and held the post of Adviser to the Egyptian Interior Ministry during 1898-1908. In 1905 he was created a C.M.G. and the same year he married Countess Victoria Alice Leopoldine Ada Gleichen, daughter of H.S.H. Prince Victor of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. In later years he was an Alderman of the London County Council, 1912-13; J.P. in Westmoreland,1913 and Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding the Lonsdale Battalion of the Border Regiment, 1914. He died in 1916.
