D. H. Farquharson entered the France / Flanders theatre of war on 15 September 1914 as a Private in the 14th (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish). He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 16 August 1915 and attained the rank of Lieutenant on 1 July 1917.
