Arthur James Hume was born in the Parish of Little Totham, Maldon, Essex and attested for the Essex Regiment in 1890, aged 18 years. He served with the regiment in Cyprus, 1891-92 and India, 1892-98. Transferred to the Reserve in 1898, he was recalled the following year for service in South Africa. Hume was wounded at Modder River on 11 February 1900 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment. He was discharged in 1902. Sold with copied service papers.
