John Teaffey was born at Greenwich in 1861 and was a porter by trade. He enlisted into the 16th Lancers in 1880, and served in Egypt as servant to Captain Lord St. Vincent; as such he was the only other rank of the regiment to receive the medal and clasp for Tel-el-Kebir. Lord St. Vincent, who was A.D.C. to Major-General Lowe, was the only officer of the regiment to receive it. On 21 September 1885 Teaffey was kicked in the mouth by a horse whilst on stable duty and was discharged on 1 December 1885, as being unfit for further duty. Sold with copied service papers and research, including a letter from W. A. Morgan concerning the rarity of the Tel-el-Kebir clasp.
